Law on
the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic

Chapter I
General Provisions

Article 1. Purpose of the Law on the Government

The purpose of the Law on the Government is to define the principles of the organization, function and working methods of the Government to ensure the efficient management of socio-economic affairs . The Law covers the use of national natural resources and the protection of the environment, ensuring the implementation of the laws of the State for the purpose of making the country strong and prosperous, upgrading the living standards of the people, and ensuring a peaceful and equitable society.

Article 2. Position and role of the Government

The Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic is the executive organ of the State, approved by the National Assembly and responsible to the National Assembly and the President of the Republic for the execution of management of the state in regard to political, economic, cultural, and social matters, the use of national resources, the protection of environment , national defense and security and foreign affairs.

Article 3. Basic principle of the operation of the Government

The Government operates in line with the principle of centralized democracy in accordance with the Constitution and the laws, with the Lao People's Revolutionary Party as the leading nucleus, and Lao Front for National Construction , the mass organizations and social organizations as its forces. The Government uses educational, economic and administrative means to manage the State economy and society.

Article 4. The term of office of the Government

The term of office of the Government corresponds to the term of office of the National Assembly. Whenever the term of office of the Government comes to an end and the National Assembly has not yet approved a new Government, the incumbent Government will continue to perform its functions.
